RIS-VV implements innovative reinforcement steel solutions

Innovative products that save time and reduce costs for construction companies

RIS-VV Ltd. is a leading company in the field of prefabricated reinforcement steel products and an undisputed leader in the robotic manufacturing of prefabricated reinforcement structures for piles, diaphragm walls, columns, beams, and other structural elements. Over its 19 years of operation, the company has not only experienced rapid growth but has also established itself as a pioneer in introducing and implementing innovative reinforcement steel solutions for the construction industry.

In an interview with ‘Stroitel, newspaper, RIS-VV owner Todor Vatev shared the story behind the company's success. He explained that the name RIS is derived from the initials of his three daughters' names and noted that the company is widely recognized under the name ‘RIS Metal’, which is also the name of the company's website.

RIS-VV was founded in 2004 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Mr. Vatev explained that he entered the reinforcement steel industry almost by chance. Prior to establishing the company, he had built a successful career in the food industry. His journey into the construction sector began during a three-year stay in Greece, where he worked as a steel fixer and recognized numerous opportunities to improve the efficiency and quality of reinforcement steel production.

He later encountered similar challenges while building his own house in Bulgaria, where he experienced common industry issues such as inaccurate dimensions, mixed and poorly organized reinforcement products, and inadequate quality standards. Determined to find better solutions, Mr. Vatev visited reinforcement steel production facilities in Germany and Italy. These visits convinced him that there was significant potential to develop a modern manufacturing business capable of delivering higher-quality products and services than those currently available on the Bulgarian market.

Mr. Vatev acquired a large production facility located on the grounds of the former ‘Kremikovtsi Metallurgical Complex’, imported the first state-of-the-art reinforcement processing machines from Germany—unmatched in Bulgaria at the time—and launched the company's operations. His investment proved perfectly timed, as Bulgaria was experiencing a construction boom, with rapid development of residential buildings, infrastructure, commercial, industrial, and public projects.

RIS-VV's reinforcement products have been used in the construction of the ‘Tsankov Kamak Dam’, Sofia Metro lines, ‘Sopharma Business Towers’, major shopping centres in Sofia, and numerous other landmark projects across the country.

"We were the first company in Bulgaria to introduce robotic and automated production systems capable of manufacturing virtually every type of prefabricated reinforcement product and reinforcement structure.

Depending on the planned or ongoing reinforcement activities at a construction site, nearly all reinforcement components required for a specific stage of the project can be manufactured under our controlled factory conditions, provided they can be transported and installed on site.

With this approach, the only real limitation is imagination. When the project is properly planned and coordinated between RIS-VV and the client, concrete trucks can arrive immediately after our deliveries. The reinforcement components are unloaded, installed directly into the formwork, and concrete placement can begin without delay.

Using conventional reinforcement installation methods, the same process would require several days, a much larger workforce on site, and would inevitably result in lower precision, greater material losses, and delays caused by weather conditions.

One of our latest technologies, developed for floor slabs, large concrete slabs, and similar applications, enabled one of our clients to avoid a one-month project delay. By using our unique reinforcement mesh panels-a technology exclusive to RIS-VV in Bulgaria—the project was completed one month ahead of schedule with only a fraction of the workforce required for conventional installation."

Plamen Yanakiev, Chief Executive Officer of RIS-VV Ltd., also highlighted the company's expertise in manufacturing reinforcement lattice girders used in tunnel construction and stabilization, emphasizing that this type of production requires exceptional precision and attention to detail.

"Regardless of their size, these structures demand the precision of fine craftsmanship. Even a deviation of a few millimetres or a single degree during production can multiply into significant errors once installed inside a tunnel, making corrections extremely difficult or even impossible," explained Mr. Yanakiev.

He added that RIS-VV has manufactured—and continues to manufacture—the reinforcement lattice girders used in the construction of most tunnel projects of this type in Bulgaria.

Both company executives emphasized that using only NISI-certified steel is of critical importance. This level of certification is currently provided by only a limited number of manufacturers in Bulgaria and across Europe.

"Working exclusively with certified steel is part of our company's philosophy. Our growth depends on our clients—their satisfaction with our work and their confidence in the raw materials we use are what inspire them to choose RIS-VV for their reinforcement solutions time and again," emphasized Todor Vatev.

„When our clients are satisfied, we know we have done our job well."

Mr. Vatev went on to highlight some of the company's most significant projects, including:

  • ‘Struma’, ‘Trakia’, ‘Maritsa’, ‘Hemus’, and ‘Europe’ motorways
  • Major shopping centres in Sofia
  • ‘Sky Fort’ and ‘Golden Century’ skyscrapers
  • ‘Hyatt’ Hotel
  • ‘Garitage Park’
  • Hypermarkets including ‘Kaufland’, ‘Fantastico’, ‘Lidl’, ‘BILLA’, ‘JYSK’, ‘Praktiker’, ‘Praktis’, and numerous other projects throughout Bulgaria.

RIS-VV's mission is to deliver precision, efficiency, and reliability, helping construction companies optimize project costs and eliminate unnecessary expenses.

This commitment has earned the trust of structural engineers, designers, and consulting engineers, who frequently recommend RIS-VV to their colleagues or rely on the company's expertise in the execution of complex construction projects.

In addition to the original production facility established at the beginning of the company's operations, RIS-VV has invested in a second manufacturing site dedicated to welding operations.

The company's advanced welding equipment

has been supplied primarily by the two leading Italian manufacturers of reinforcement welding machinery.

RIS-VV continuously keeps pace with the latest technological developments by attending major international exhibitions dedicated to welding technologies, where company representatives regularly exchange knowledge and explore new manufacturing solutions.

"These events are extremely valuable because they allow us to gain experience and exchange ideas with industry leaders. Whenever we discover an innovative technology, we strive to implement it within our own production processes," said Plamen Yanakiev.

Although introducing new technologies to the relatively conservative Bulgarian construction market can be challenging, RIS-VV remains committed to implementing innovative solutions that enhance its capabilities and better serve the evolving needs of its clients.

The company continuously develops new reinforcement products, including pile reinforcement cages, diaphragm wall reinforcement cages, prefabricated columns, beams, and a wide range of other reinforcement steel elements.

Mr. Vatev also highlighted the company's engineered reinforcement meshes, which are manufactured to meet each project's exact specifications.

"These meshes can be produced with virtually any bar spacing, can be bent into complex shapes, and used to manufacture complete reinforcement assemblies—all according to the client's design requirements. As I mentioned earlier, we also produce our proprietary reinforcement mesh panels using unique machinery available exclusively at RIS-VV."

According to Mr. Vatev, the company's prefabricated reinforcement elements provide significant support to the construction industry, particularly at a time when the shortage of skilled labour continues to be a major challenge.

"Since the day RIS-VV was founded, our highest priority has always been delivering exceptional quality throughout every stage of the process—from receiving the order to manufacturing, delivery, and unloading on site. Our production facilities have the capacity to meet the needs of companies of every size, manufacturing a wide variety of reinforcement steel components while consistently maintaining the highest standards of quality and on-time delivery."
